Hawgs
Ride for CURE
August 24th was a perfect day for a bike ride. There
wasn’t a cloud
in the sky. It was around 75 degrees and
there was a slight breeze. What could be
better than going for a 75-mile motorcycle ride
through the beautiful upstate New York
countryside? How about the chance to
help out a good cause at the same time?
Under the auspices of the Avon Hawgs,
454 riders got together at the Rush Creekside
Inn for the fourth annual Poker Run
to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer Association.
This was by far the largest and most
successful run to date. Organized by Tim
Lane, the Poker Run raised $5,447 for CURE.
At the end of the ride the motorcyclists gathered
back at the Creekside Inn to eat a great barbecue and dance
to the music of Shine and Riverside Drive.
When asked how this all came about, Lane said,
"Four years ago when
we were talking about sponsoring our first Poker Run, we were about
CURE because they were on my route. I felt that their work was really
important, so I suggested that they be the
beneficiaries." The rest is history. After the second
Poker Run, Tim decided to put on a Rock
and Roll Jamboree. Each event has continued
to grow over the years. To date the
Avon Hawgs have donated over $16,670 to
CURE.

"Harley riders really have a bad
reputation," Lane
said. "I would like people to know that
we are just a bunch of guys (and ladies) like
any other group. We like to ride and we like
to help our neighbors. When we can do both
at the same time we are really glad. "Thanks to Tim Lane and the
rest of the Avon
Hawgs for all their hard work and generous donations. Proceeds went
to funding this newsletter. Keep watching the newsletter for updates
about the upcoming Rock and Roll Jamboree, which will take place
in March of 2004.
